Loki sat with Holly in his lap, cradling her as she tried to catch a few minutes of sleep on the street. The cats curled up around the pair, sleeping coiled together. He kept a fierce frown on his face, daring anyone to mock him or threaten Holly.
It was hard to be taken seriously as a man when a quilt of cats draped themselves across you, but Loki did his best. Holly's warmth spread through his bare chest. He tried not to let the smile twitching into the corner of his lips stay as he scanned the street through the alley. Holly cursed in her sleep, curling up closer to him.
The cats, too, began to move as one entity, repositioning themselves around them and yawning. A few gave Loki blank stares before tucking their heads back away.
The movement stopped suddenly. He checked to see if any eyes watched him, and then Loki leaned over to nuzzle Holly affectionately. He felt her smooth skin against him that mixed with the soft fur of the cats all around him. He knew the cats and her came as a package. When he kissed her cheek, he'd find orange hair on his lips.
It was not exactly pleasant.
He saw the drool lingering in the corner of Holly's gaping mouth, and he knew the pros outweighed the cons. Besides, he decided, the cats weren't always cons.
Loki drew his head away from hers to return to staring ahead. He listened to Holly's steady breathing mixing with the purrs from her friends. And together their warm, smooth sounds overcame the noise from the street.
